Omar Gonzalez has dreamed about opening a small Cuban restaurant for years… taking him back to his heritage as a Cuban-born child who moved with his family to Long Beach when he was seven.
Now the small sit-down restaurant serving coffee, Cuban sandwiches and pastries has come alive at 376 Vista Village Drive.
Along with a cross-cultural twist of “Modern Churros” that come in multiple flavors and used in custom-made desserts.
Welcome to The Modern Churro… celebrating Cuban food along with original churro variations from Spain and Mexico.
The traditional Cuban sandwich is joined on the menu with other Cuban sandwich favorites like Vaca Frita and Ropa Vieja — as well as Cuban inspired chicken sandwich. A variety of breakfast sandwiches and pastries are available for the morning crowd.
Omar said the food is inspired largely from family recipes — including the Cuban bread that is baked locally.
Rounding out the menu is soft serve ice cream that can be customized with dozens of toppings. The main event: The Modern Churro, of course! It’s your favorite soft service ice cream flavor (vanilla, chocolate or swirl) with multiple toppings that are surrounded by churros!
Shhhh… and if you whisper at the counter, the team will make you a churro shake that only insiders know about.
